The Value Crisis

“It is a rare experience for us to meet someone who “gets” our commitment to values and we genuinely appreciate it. [...] The feedback has been that you presented very engagingly, kept our attention and offered us insights that made an impact.  You have set yourself a “high bar” for your next slot but I am sure it will be equally challenging and inspiring.”

Speaking to Congregations

Andrew Welch grew up in a number of different Christian denominations.  (Since his mother was a professional singer, the family attended whichever church had the best choir!)  He is currently most active with the West Hill United Church, where he is repeatedly invited to give present his illuminating 'perspectives' as part of their Sunday service.

Due to the nature of his value system studies, a number of different faith groups have asked him to speak to their members about his ideas and new perspectives.  Andrew enjoys being challenged by the issues raised in these forums, and is keenly interested in how congregations balance the value systems inside their faith with those that face them outside of it.

"Our Value Personae" - September 2023 (36:12)

Andrew was invited to address the congregation at West Hill United Church, speaking on human values, and specifically referencing their impressive 2-page VisionWorks document.  This half-hour 'sermon' gives an excellent introduction to Andrew's views on what he calls our value personae, as well as opening us up to one of his most important concepts: the contrast between number-based-values and qualitative (or human) values.

Re-exploring the Relevance of Faith Values

Audience:  Congregations and faith groups

As members of a faith community, we congregate to explore and practice our shared values.  Yet how aware are we of precisely what defines those values?  What do we do when they are in conflict with values that we find outside of our congregation, in our everyday lives.  Religion and spiritualism have been largely relegated to islands of ‘good’ within oceans of value systems based on numbers where more is always worth more.  And now we are slowly beginning to realize that the precedence society gives to number-based values could well be responsible for some of the biggest challenges facing the planet.

Andrew Welch has created a new framework for exploring value systems that can be applied to any spiritual practice.  Given a different way of looking at the value crisis looming on the horizon, we can better understand our own conflicts and pursue ways of resolving them within our communities and beyond.  His fresh perspective presents the roles of both religion and government in a new light, and provides a compelling argument for the de-secularization of society.

Putting Our 'Alternative' Values into Daily Living

Audience:  Congregations and faith groups

Looking at the world around us, it seems clear that the values proclaimed in our worship and the practice of our faith are not commonly the norm.  Attempting to live those values is one thing, but how do that with joy?  Better yet, how do we make those values more commonplace in others?

Having extensively explored different perspectives on human values, Andrew Welch is now ready to share insights into simple things anyone can do to bring a new approach to daily practice.  The timing of this facilitated exploration is perfect; the global pandemic has caused all of us to take a hard look at what is truly important in our lives.  Spirtual values are not just for dilemmas.  They also figure into our relationships with businesses, workplaces, the environment, and even politics.  This talk goes beyond the pulpit and faith interactions to look at how we can bring more joy into our lives and those of others with some (perhaps unexpected) changes to our perspectives on the world around us.
